Jeff Wike,
teaching all that energy efficiency is an everyday necessity

Helping to shape the future of energy use in the United States, Jeff Wike, supervisor of electrical labs at Penn State Berks, was instrumental in the design and layout of the new Gaige Technology and Business Innovation Building on Berks campus. He procured the equipment for the engineering laboratories and was the lead person for reviewing plans and working with the architects on technical issues concerning the engineering areas of the buildings, which involve a solar array and an electric vehicle charging station. In recognition of his work on this project as well as his performance overall, Jeff received the Outstanding Staff Member Award, which recognizes a full-time staff member who has demonstrated excellence.

Jeff is also one of the lead organizers in Penn State Berks' annual celebration of Engineers Week. He coordinates panel discussions, solicits engineers from industry to speak, and organizes a luncheon for the event, which gives students opportunities to network with prospective employers in a relaxed environment. Another event Jeff helps operate is the Project Lead the Way Design Challenge, which brings high school students together with Project Lead the Way’s engineering programs from across Pennsylvania.

Jeff is a mentor to students, helping seniors in the Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology program with their senior design project, in which they build a device with extensive electrical and electronic design components. He also serves as an adviser to the Robotics Club and has guided the club to two victories in the past three years in local area robotic competitions.

His contributions reach beyond the campus through his involvement in the Industrial Advisory Committee meetings for the Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, and Mechanical Engineering Technology programs.

Always helping his students, Jeff also arranges field trips for students and even drives them. Additionally, he is actively involved with campus tours and other group visits.
